Details

Kousarnag Trek expedition is the only major trek in the Pir-Panjal Mountain range, a sub-mountain range of the Himalayas. The trek starts from Ahabal Falls the main tourist attraction in Shopian known as the Apple Bowl of Kashmir. It serves as a base camp to the sacred Lake of Kousarnag. Kongwattan and Mahinag are the best camping grounds of the Kashmir Valley. Though trekking in Kashmir is not the newest but still this expedition is no walk in the park. Arduous days, steep and rocky passes, and altitudes approaching 4200m all collide to create a challenging trek in one of the most beautiful and serene Himalayas of Kashmir.

In summer the best months to visit are from June to October. These months have pleasant weather, and the trip looks stunning with dense conifer forests, lush landscape and snow-peaked mountains.

Itinerary

DAY 1

Srinagar (drive) – Aharbal

3 hrs
70 kms
7,217 ft

Our first campsite will be at Aharbal Water Falls which is often known as the Niagara Falls of Kashmir. The stunning Kausar Nag Lake (13,500 feet above sea level), which is located deep among the pine and fir forests, is where the water’s source resides. The trekker is energized by the abundance of wildlife, natural flowers, and enormous alpine trees along the route. Aharbal, which is renowned for its beautiful splendour, is a popular destination for picnic for the villagers and schoolchildren that swarm the area during hot spells in plain areas.

DAY 2

Aharbal (trek begins)– Kongwattan

6 hrs
5 kms
8,530 ft

Halfway through the two-day hike to the high altitude Kausar Nag lake are the picturesque Kongwattan Meadows. The meadow, which is completely encircled by a lush canopy of alpine trees, is a serene and tranquil setting that is primarily populated by cattle herders in the summer. The Veshav river is a great place to go fishing because the Fisheries department added trout fish into it. It only requires a fishing license, which can be purchased at the authorized Fisheries department in Aharbal.

DAY 3

Kongwattan – Mahinag

5 hrs
6 kms
9,515 ft

Near Mahinag and Kongwattan, shepards working on their routine activities (grazing their animals and gathering firewood) can be seen. A tall mountain peak that has a steep rise and requires a lot of effort must be climbed after leaving Mahinag, which is situated at the base of large mountains, in order to see Kausarnag.

DAY 4

Mahinag – Kousarnag Lake

4 hrs
5 kms
11,555 ft

Mahinag Valley, which has several tiny ponds, and cross 2 to 5 glaciers en route. From Mahinag, there is a difficult ascent to the lake. Leave early to walk for the day to Kausar Nag Lake. The Lake can be reached in one day from Kongwattan Base Camp, making it a popular hiking location in a high-altitude meadow. It is well known for its stunning natural surroundings, which include gorgeous valleys, serene lakes, and cascading rivers as well as a large diversity of animals and plants. Spend the night in Kausar Nag.

DAY 5

Kousarnag – Kongwattan – Aharbal (drive) – Srinagar

10-11 hrs
17 kms
8,530 ft

We start our hike early in the morning, and we should be in Aharbal by lunchtime. This time, we walk across a gorgeous meadow as you make your way from Kausarnag to Mahinag and then from Meinag to Sekijjan. Enjoy your breakfast in the meadows and near the river at Sekkijan. After lunch, the last part of the trip will be completed in the direction of Aharbal. From Aharbal, return to Srinagar and spend the night there.
